Understanding our own emotions — and those of others — sits at the heart of inclusive workplaces.
Te Uru Tāngata Centre for Workplace Inclusion has introduced three new Emotional Intelligence e-Learning modules designed to help teams strengthen empathy, self-awareness and communication across difference.
Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Trainer Amelia Stone says emotional intelligence is a foundational skill for inclusion because it shapes how people respond to challenge, difference and change.
“When we develop emotional intelligence, we start to notice the patterns in our reactions — what triggers us, where our assumptions come from, and how they influence our interactions,” she says. “That awareness allows us to pause, adjust and respond more thoughtfully, particularly in moments of tension or misunderstanding.”
By increasing emotional intelligence, workplaces can foster greater respect and connection. People become more attuned to unspoken cultural norms, more able to challenge their own biases, and more confident communicating with those who hold different views of respect or courtesy.
“Organisations that actively grow these skills see more cohesive teams, stronger trust and a genuine sense of manākitanga,” Amelia says. “It’s about creating the emotional capacity to include others, even when it’s not easy.”
Each module takes around 20 to 30 minutes to complete and they are designed to be completed as a set. Together, they provide a practical pathway for building the empathy, awareness and relationship skills essential for leading inclusion in today’s workplaces.
